Alligator Pie (Collector's Edition)

Authors: Dennis Lee and Frank Newfield

my favourite book, and I'm 25
I would recommend this book to anyone. It is fun and fantastic, the illustrations are terrific, and the poems resonate well with children and adults.

My Childhood Favorite
The Alligator Pie series filled my childhood with fun and whimsy. I'm pregnant now and I want to buy a whole new collection so that my child will remember "Peter was a pilot, who flew a jumbo jet, who crashed in Lake Ontario and got his bottom wet." Silly and fun.

Must-have kids book with nonsense, geography & lots of fun.
This classic Canadian kid's book crosses the continent with fun poems and stories from north of the border. There are a number of nonsense rhymes, and many others which follow a typical child's line of thought to those surprise and imaginative conclusions that make children such a delight! Once in a while, a good map of Canada will add an extra dimension of enjoyment, introducing the young audience/reader to another country and to the world of maps. It is, however, the whimsical and imaginative poems which will hold the attention of both child and adult. Soon, the whole family will be chanting, "Alligator pie, alligator pie, if I don't get some......"

The Grasshopper: Games, Life and Utopia

think, smile, digest
I first read this book in 1980. It was a gift from my best and wisest friend, the hardcover version which I still treasure to this day. I have since probably bought half a dozen copies of this for the distinct reason that I felt someone merited a copy as a gift. This book makes you stop and think about yourself, your life and your expectations. It does not criticize your path nor does it necessarily offer an alternative. It just makes you think....... in an easy, enjoyable manner. This book won't give you the "secret" to a fulfilling life of health, wealth or whatever else you seek, but it will make you think...... and every now and then you may actually catch yourself smiling as you do so. Recommended, highly - but more so, fondly remembered 20 years, university, failed and successful career prospects, failed and successful romantic prospects later. Yes so ever fondly remembered.

Platonic Narrativity to Explore the Philosophy of Games
Suits' claim that he is not furthering the extensive work done in the field of game theory is correct, but i feel he underestimates his contribution to our understanding of the importance of liesure activities in our lives. i am not so interested in the mathematical proofs provided by Von Nueman and Morgenstern, and how game theory is applicable to life, as i am in discovering why i have such a fascination with games. Suits' Grasshopper, via a Platonic dialogue, examines the nature of the game, what it is, why it is employed, etc. This already effective narrative structure is further enhanced by the Grasshopper's many digressions and introductions of hypothetical characters and situations. Suits has created a meta-fictional forum for both discharging his ideas and entertaining the reader. i found myself compelled forward, relishing every word, and fascinated by Suits' logic process and conclusions. i recommend this title to anyone interested in a hybrid of game theory and actual game play; the book does not reduce games to a mathematical model but it also avoids describing any one game in particular. Rather Suits seems interested in analyzing the structure and nature of games as a whole. It is a philosophical outlook on a very intriguing subject.

Hummingbird Gardens
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (April, 1996)
Authors: Barbara Nielsen and Nancy Newfield
Average review score:

An excellent resource
Including information from real-life hummingbird gardeners around the U.S., this book will be useful to virtually anyone in North America who's trying to create backyard habitat for these fascinating birds. The main shortcoming of this book is in the depth of coverage of the plants, particularly photos. There were not enough showing an entire plant (though more than enough of the birds themselves), and the one feeder illustrated contained dyed sugar water (a no-no and contradictory to the text). Novice hummingbird gardeners should cross-reference the plant names with national and regional gardening guides for photos and cultural information such as size and temperature tolerance.

A wealth of informative text and spectacular photos.
Long, long ago - experience taught me the smoothest way through life is to "never make recommendations to anybody about anything." Sam and I have learned to qualify those don't-miss-it things encompassing: great places to eat, visit, read, watch, etc. For example, we now say, "The food was great the night we were there," or "You would love the movie if you enjoy such-and-such."

With all of those lessons in mind, I'm unequivocally saying, "Get your hands on Hummingbird Gardens as soon as possible." I don't think the co-authors, Nancy Newfield and Barbara Nielsen, have yet realized the true scope of what they have accomplished.

I knew Nancy was working on a book with somebody, but thought it was strictly for the southern Louisiana area. When Sam brought home my unexpected copy, it took only a few minutes of browsing for me to tell him something like, "Good lord, this thing is really, really good - and I mean good!" That's saying a lot for a person who is not easily impressed, and the more I read, the better it got.

Somehow, Nancy and Barbara truly did it all in Hummingbird Gardens by combining a wealth of well written, informative text with spectacular photographs of both the hummingbirds and the flowering plants so loved by these creatures. The beautiful birds and blossoming plants are well covered in their own separate chapters.

At the same time though, the content flows smoothly into pertinent regional information for those in: California, The Pacific Northwest, The Southwest, The Western Mountains, The Southeast and The East and Midwest. They so skillfully blend bird and bloom with helpful tips and enthusiasts' experiences that you will want to read on and on about other hummers in other gardens!

As far as I can determine, they left no stone unturned. All who open its covers will soon learn to appreciate the inclusion of subjects often left out of other publications. This one did not forget such things as: References and Further Reading (great bibliography), Resources (supermarkets for the hummers' favorite natural foods), and an excellent Index.

One last thing. Although Hummingbird Gardens was primarily done for the millions of us who simply love and enjoy these particular bounties of nature - I sincerely believe ornithology, as a whole, will gain as well. The professionals cannot be out in the field all of the time, thus what we see "our" hummers doing in our yards can contribute a great deal to the science. Meanwhile, we are very lucky, indeed, that Barbara and Nancy decided to share their knowledge and discoveries with the rest of us!

Beautiful and Informative
This book has incredible photographs and gobs of information about these amazing creatures. It's an unabashed sales-job to get you to become a hummingbird gardener. (That's not a bad idea!)

Sans Giac Certification: Security Essentials Toolkit

Authors: Eric Cole, Matthew Newfield, John M. Millican, and Stephen Northcutt

good book, but not always accurate
If you don't have any security background then this book is a good place to start. Be ready, however, for most of the links to be out of date (the book was published in 2002). This can be circumvented by a little help from Google to find the utilities you need for the exercises. There are also a few inaccuracies in the syntax provided. These can be resolved with help from "man" (i.e. 'man ipchains') or the help for the particular utility.

Great hands on book
I really liked this book. I liked how it did not just inform you about these tools but actually had you use them to gain understanding. Any good systems/network admin should be familier with the tools in this book. Both UNIX and Windows admins will gain great experiance and understanding of their systems weaknesses.
I have read many books on "hacking" and security and this one is the only one that actually has you use these tools.
It is setup in a very easy to follow and understand format. This book is a must for EVERY Admin, not just for preparing you for a test. Even if you never take a security exam, this book will give you great intro and experience with the use of the tools described.

Excellent reference
The GIAC Certification: Security Essentials Toolkit (GSEC) is an excellent reference to use for the SANS GSEC certification.

The book is quite different from most other, if not all certification prep guides. Rather than simply provide the reader with reference material and acronyms to memorize, the book has exercises that the reader uses for their preparation.

Each chapter has a separate hands-on exercise that is used to solidify the knowledge required for the exam. The exercises are well laid-out and organized, and proceed in a methodical way.

The only think I personally did not like about the book was its size, it is 11 x 8.5''. I found it to be cumbersome at times to use.

But its main point, content, is first rate. Anyone planning on obtaining GSEC certification should definitely invest the money- in the GIAC Certification: Security Essentials Toolkit, it is well worth it.

Nursing Student Reviews Book
I agree that this is a great book. It really helps me with my care plans and is easy to use. The only reason it only got 4 stars is that I HAVE seen more user friendly diagnosis books for beginning students, but for that same reason I can see this book helping me in my advanced studies down the road.

Clinical Applications of Nursing Diagnosis
This textbook on nursing diagnosis is an indispensible guide in creating the nursing diagnosis. It is well organized and easy to read. The diagnoses are grouped according to the 11 functional health patterns. Interventions are simple and broken down into easy to apply format. Additionally, interventions are listed for adults, women, psychiatric, gerontic, and for the home health care situation making this text useful in a number of clinical situations. Rationales are included with each intervention saving precious time for the nursing student writing nursing process papers. This text does not link medical diagnosis with nusing diagnosis which may make it difficult to use for some students. I, and my fellow nursing students, have found this text to be an indespensible guide in developing our nursing diagnoses.

Robert Kennedy: A Memoir.
Published in Hardcover by E P Dutton (January, 1969)
Author: Jack Newfield
Average review score:

a little bit boring
this biography begins in 1964,and it's the most boing part of his life. He only speeks of the elections and not about the man.
It sometimes very boring, but there is a lot of information about bob.

A first class perspective to RFK's last campaign.
A good, well written book; however, it is written like a journalist and not as a historians perspective, meaning it short and at times not cumbersome enough. However, for one who just wants to casually read about the events immediatly preceding Kennedy's death than this book would be a first choice.

A Different Viewpoint
I've read many books on the Kennedy family, especially Bobby. This book is not like most. Few books can make enjoyable reading out of a story told many times before. It is hard to read the same praise and criticism over and over. Newfield's memoir is simple, truthful, and an excellent read.
His writing isn't stuffy or obtuse, he is a journalist, not a historian. The book is short, but covers the last four years in some detail, and the last few months even closer.
If you are sick of reading that RFK and JFK were perfect, or that they were decietful men who used and abused thier power, this is the book for you. Newfield's own Introduction will admit that he initially hated Bobby. Only through exposure did a deep admiration develop, although Bobby was still flawed.
Read it- it's worth it.

The Full Rudy: The Man, the Myth, the Mania
Published in Paperback by Thunder's Mouth Press (February, 2003)
Author: Jack Newfield
Average review score:

The truth about Guliani
It's a relief that a book like this has been released. Newfield paints the truth about Guliani and is quite fair. Everything discussed in the book is based on fact and shows that Guliani, in reality, was nothing but a sub-par mayor who screwed New York City in numerous ways. Newfield admits that there is no denying that Guliani did a great job after the attacks on Sept. 11 - but that does not necessarily mean that all should be forgotten for his poor work as a mayor from the years before. Want to know the real Guliani? Read this book. You'll be amazed by the truth, whether Guliani wants you to hear it or not.

The Truth about Rudy
For everyone who thinks Rudolph Giuliani is a hero and the savior of New York City, they should read Newfield's book. It objectively tells the ugly truth about this deeply flawed man.

A terrific brief journey through recent history
Jack Newfield, who wrote for the Village Voice for many many years, is one of the last of the great muckraking journaLists. They have been replaces by tabloid tv journalism, which is another story. This book takes on one of the recent myths of the new century, that of "americas mayor" Rudolph Guliani. Newfield straight away calls him a"c+ mayor",which is actually rather objective.Chapter by chapter,he brings up the screwy foibles of the Guliani years{his refusal to meet with any minority politicains,to gather votes for a compromise, outside of herman Badillo cost him control of the Board of Ed and led to cuts in education and no contract for the teachers for over 2 years}His bullying of anyone who didnt agree with him is well documented.Newfield acknowledges the great job that Guliani did for theose terribel two weeks in september of 2001,but states, convincingly that the work of his adminstartion must be judged from "september 10 and before" also. Mr Guliani has presedential aspirations, but his hubris and temper will be his undoing. this book shows how.And why. First rate!

Only in America: The Life and Crimes of Don King

great movie from the book
don't miss the movie made from the book, "Don King, Only in America", beatifully directed and edited, great dialogues, hard to believe they found an actor that can mimic Don King, an actor himself. Good to see this fictionalized movie, alog with the documentary "When We Were Kings" to compare how the scenes of really happened scenarios were recreated

Don is Something else
Don King is a Cat that knows how to Spit out Game both in&out of the Ring.no matter who comes along nobody is gonna outlast Don King.this Book tackles all the things that the HBO movie went over.you see a Guy who would not be denied. His Famous Words Only in America fit Him to a Letter T.He is Witty,Sharp,Hustler&Always on His Game no matter what He is getting down with.

Great Man Adequate Book
You just can't ruin a book written about a man as inspiring as Don King. White America likes a succsessful blackman only if he succeeded its way. By this I mean the classic way through a college education and a white liberal view on greed. The conclusion one must draw from the life story of Don King (this version or any other) is that Don King is a thinker not a follower an euntreprenuer not a wage-earner and a succsessful man despite overwhelming odds.
